During a sabbatical year in 2019-20, Sue Giffard researched and wrote an account of who lived on the island of Manahatta in the early 17th century, and where they lived. In trying to answer the question of how the island was transformed, with no sign that the Indigenous inhabitants ever lived here, she looked at how during the 1600s their homeland was stripped from them and they were forced into exile.
